Education– BA –Econ, MA- Leadership Studies , Executive Leadership training in Stanford University.
Experience –Employment career spanning 36 years (1979-2015) in Development finance and insurance, the crowning of which was in Co-operative Insurance Sevices (CIS), now CIC Insurance Group which he joined in 1998 as Chief Manager, became Managing Director in 2001 and Group CEO in 2011.
He led the transformation of CIS from a very small co-operative insurer to the 3rd largest insurer out of 48 insurance companies in Kenya with 3 local subsidiaries and an Associate company in Kenya and the leading co-operative insurer in Africa with another 3 regional subsidiaries in South Sudan, Uganda, and Malawi by the time of his retirement in February 2015.
Nelson has been honored with two awards by the president of Kenya for his contribution in co-operative and insurance development; Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) in 2005 and Moran of the Burning Spear (MBS) in 2011.
In the insurance industry he was honored with the Life Time Achievement Award in 2012. In March 2017, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Leadership by the Swiss Management Academy. In April 2019, he was given the award of Fellow member of the Institute of Directors of kenya, (FmIoD).
He is past chairman of the Association of Kenya Insurers(AKI) and Vice Chairman of the following organizations; Federation of Kenya Employers(FKE), Association of Microfinance Institutions of Kenya (AMFI), and the Co-operative University College of Kenya.
He has served as board member of many local and international organizations including; Kenya Re, College of Insurance, Takaful Insurance of Africa, International Co-operative & Mutual Insurance Federation (ICMIF)- UK. He was the first chair of the African Insurance Organization (AIO) Microinsurance Working Group. In 2013, he served as a member of the Presidential Task force on Parastatal Reform.He has also served as a deacon and Church Secretary of Christ is The Answer Ministries (CITAM).
He has facilitated in a number of Centre for Corporate Governance training programmes for directors and chairmen and the Sacco Directors governance training organized by SASRA.
Currently, he is chairman of Smep Micofinance Bank; Enwealth Financial Services. He is Board member of; Kenyatta National Hospital; Africa International University (AIU), Habitat for Humanity and a trustee of Kenya Bible Translation Trust. He is also a member of the executive Audit Committee of Nyandarua County.
Nelson is a regular speaker in both local and international conferences and seminars in insurance, co-operatives, leadership; governance and retirement planning.
